Moissanite & Cubic Zirconia vs Diamond: An Honest Comparison
We work exclusively in natural and lab-grown diamonds — we don't stock moissanite or cubic zirconia. But it's one of the questions we're asked most often, usually by someone trying to stretch a budget as far as it will go. Since we're not selling you either alternative, here's the comparison as we'd give it to a friend.
What they actually are
A diamond, natural or lab-grown, is pure crystallised carbon — the two are chemically and optically identical, and only their origin differs. Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different mineral entirely, grown in a lab because natural moissanite is vanishingly rare. Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a synthetic crystal — zirconium dioxide — made purely to imitate diamond and cut for as little as a few hundred rupees per stone.
Hardness — how they hold up to daily wear
Hardness is measured on the Mohs scale, where diamond sits at a perfect 10 — the hardest natural material there is. Moissanite is 9.25, hard enough for daily wear and resistant to scratching. Cubic zirconia is 8–8.5, noticeably softer: it can pick up fine scratches over months of everyday wear, which dulls its shine long before a diamond or moissanite would show any wear.
Sparkle — the tell an eye can learn
This is where the three differ most, and it's the opposite of what people expect. Moissanite has higher dispersion than diamond, so it throws more rainbow-coloured fire — under certain light it can look almost too sparkly, a giveaway to a trained eye. Cubic zirconia has a softer, more one-note glassy sparkle, and tends to look slightly 'flat' next to a diamond's balance of white brilliance and coloured fire. A diamond's sparkle is the benchmark the other two are trying to copy — that's not opinion, it's why they exist.
Price — the real reason people ask
Cubic zirconia is the cheapest by a wide margin — a CZ stone the size of a 1-carat diamond can cost a few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees. Moissanite sits well below diamond too, though it's not as cheap as CZ. Lab-grown diamonds cost meaningfully less than natural diamonds of the same size and quality, while remaining a genuine diamond in every physical sense. If budget is the real constraint, a lab-grown diamond is usually the better trade-off than moving to moissanite or CZ — you keep the material, just not the mining origin.
Resale and long-term value
Natural diamonds hold resale value best, particularly certified stones with good cut and clarity. Lab-grown diamonds have some resale value, though currently less than natural stones of comparable quality, as the lab-grown market is still maturing. Moissanite and cubic zirconia have negligible resale value — they're priced for what they are, an affordable substitute, not an asset.
So what should you actually choose?
For an engagement ring or a piece meant to be worn daily for decades and eventually passed down, we'd steer you toward a natural or lab-grown diamond — the durability and the fact that it's the real thing both matter over that timeframe. For occasion jewellery you want to wear without worry — a going-out piece, a backup for travel — cubic zirconia is a practical, honest choice at its price point, as long as you know what you're buying. We just think you should choose knowingly, which is really the point of this article.

Is moissanite a real diamond?
No. Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different mineral from diamond, which is crystallised carbon. It's a diamond simulant — designed to resemble a diamond — not a type of diamond. Lab-grown diamonds, by contrast, are real diamonds; only their origin differs from mined ones.
Can a jeweller tell moissanite or CZ apart from a real diamond?
Yes, reliably. A jeweller's loupe and standard tests (thermal and electrical conductivity, refractive index) distinguish them quickly — moissanite in particular has a distinctive double refraction under magnification. If in doubt, any GIA- or IGI-certified diamond comes with paperwork that settles the question outright.
Does cubic zirconia turn yellow or cloudy over time?
It can. CZ is softer than diamond and moissanite, so daily wear leaves it with fine surface scratches that scatter light unevenly, making it look duller or slightly hazy after a year or two of regular use. Diamonds and moissanite hold their original clarity far longer.
Is moissanite worth buying instead of a diamond?
It depends what you want. Moissanite is more durable and holds up better than cubic zirconia, and costs less than a diamond — but it has essentially no resale value and its sparkle reads differently to a trained eye. For a piece meant to last a lifetime, we'd suggest a lab-grown diamond instead; for something you want at a lower cost and won't mind replacing later, moissanite is a reasonable, honest choice.
