Jewellery Questions Everyone Asks — A Pune Jeweller Answers
Some jewellery questions come up again and again — the same ones people search the world over, and the same ones we're asked across the counter in Pune. Here are clear, honest answers to the most common ones.
What is the difference between karat and carat?
They sound alike but measure different things. Karat (K) is the purity of gold — 24K is 99.9% pure, 22K is 91.6% and 18K is 75%. Carat (ct) is the weight of a gemstone such as a diamond, where one carat equals 200 milligrams (0.2 grams). So you might buy a 22K gold ring set with a 1-carat diamond.
How can I tell if gold is real?
The simplest proof is the BIS hallmark and six-digit HUID stamped on the piece, which you can verify free on the BIS Care app. Real gold is not magnetic, does not rust and does not discolour your skin. For certainty on a valuable piece, any jeweller can test purity on a karat meter — don't rely on DIY tests alone.
How can I tell if a diamond is real?
The reliable way is an independent certificate from a lab such as GIA or IGI. A real diamond disperses light with sharp brilliance and crisp facets, but imitations like cubic zirconia and moissanite can fool the eye. Note that lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — they are grown rather than mined. When in doubt, have it tested by a jeweller.
Gold, platinum, white gold or silver — what is the difference?
Yellow gold is traditional, holds its value and comes in 22K or 18K. Platinum is rarer, heavier, naturally white and hypoallergenic — pricier but very durable. White gold is yellow gold mixed with white metals and rhodium-plated, so it needs re-plating every few years to stay bright. Silver is affordable and lovely for fashion pieces but softer and prone to tarnish. Choose by budget, skin sensitivity and how often you will wear it.
Which finger should you wear a ring on?
There is no strict rule — it is largely cultural and personal. Engagement and wedding rings are traditionally worn on the fourth 'ring finger', on the left hand in many Western cultures and often the right hand in India. Cocktail and statement rings look great on the index or middle finger. Wear what feels comfortable and right for you.
How much should you spend on an engagement ring?
Ignore the old 'two or three months' salary' rule — that was a marketing slogan, not financial advice. Spend an amount you are genuinely comfortable with. Decide your total budget first, then let the 4Cs and the setting fit it. A well-cut smaller diamond, or a lab-grown stone, can look stunning for far less.
What jewellery is best for sensitive skin?
If your skin reacts to jewellery, the usual culprit is nickel. Choose platinum, higher-karat gold (18K or 22K) or 925 sterling silver, and avoid cheap alloys and low-karat white gold that may contain nickel. Platinum and high-purity gold are the safest hypoallergenic options.
How do I choose the right necklace length?
It depends on your neckline and the look you want — a princess length (about 43–48 cm) suits almost any outfit and is perfect for a single pendant, while longer matinee and opera lengths flatter high necklines and sarees. See our size guide for the full breakdown, or we will hold the chain against you in-store so you can see exactly how it falls.
